An organized classroom is important to the process of teaching and learning. Maintaining classroom organization can be challenging when you have students to focus on, lessons to plan and papers to grade.
Classroom Organization Hacks
These tips and tricks will help you streamline organizational tasks so that your classroom looks and feels organized. By achieving this, you and your students will reap the benefits of a more conducive learning environment.
Re-Purpose Small Cardboard Containers.
Give empty shoe boxes, toilet paper or cardboard tubes, and other small cardboard boxes new purpose by using them to store writing utensils, markers and other shared supplies. Stand the cardboard tubes inside a box, side by side, until the box is full and the tubes will stand on their own. Fill each tube with writing utensils and other supplies so students can easily access them and put them away without assistance from you.
Multi-Purpose Storage Area.
Place two file cabinets two to three feet apart. Lay a folded blanket or cushion on the floor between the file cabinets and add a couple of throw pillows against the wall. Now you have a storage area and reading nook all in one.
Organizational Timesavers.
Certain tasks are repeated throughout the year, such as changing out posters or wall displays, or creating classroom lists for projects and activities. Make these tasks more time-efficient with some simple organizational steps. Place Velcro on the walls so you can take down and put up posters quickly. Make multiple photocopies of class lists in advance. Label every storage bin and container for students and yourself to make finding things easier.
Multitasking Storage Bins.
Clear or colorful plastic storage bins with wheels can be easily moved, making reorganization a snap. Likewise, when the bins aren’t in use, you and your students can use the tops of the stationery bins for game tables, a book display or artwork display. Space is a hot commodity in a busy classroom. Utilizing the tops of storage bins and file cabinets can free up much-needed space elsewhere.
Utilize Wall Space.
Hanging file folders can multi-task and prevent clutter from accumulating on your desk and every other flat surface in your classroom. Hang wall storage units on each wall where possible to hold turned in assignments and other important papers. Position a hanging shoe caddy on a closet door to hold small games, puzzles and other activities.
