The 100th Day of School is coming up — can you believe it? If you’re looking for an easy way to celebrate while getting your students to put their counting skills to good use, try one of these fun activities in your classroom this year.
6 Activities for Kids on the 100th Day of School
To honor the occasion, here are some of our favorite ways to mark the milestone and have fun with your students at the same time.
100th Day Jewelry
Make the big number come alive by having students string necklaces with 100 beads and wear them for the rest of the day. You can use a kit of special 100th day beads for this project, or you can do it yourself with string and Cheerios or Froot Loops for an edible project. Colorful paper clips will also make a fun chain when you hook them together, though students will likely have to double them up to wear them as necklaces.
100th Day Penny Jar
In the week leading up to the big day, have your students decorate a water cooler jug and set it up in the cafeteria or front entryway to collect pennies for a favorite charity. When the 100th day arrives, have your students count out pennies in groups of 100 to calculate the amount of money raised. Be sure to announce it over the intercom at the end of the day!
100th Day Stuffed Animal Parade
The 100th day is a great day for an all-day reading party. Let kids wear their pajamas and slippers and bring a few favorite stuffed animals along for the fun. For the big moment, have students count and line up 100 animals around your classroom or down the hallway for a cute parade. Snap a photo to send home!
100th Day Paper Chains
Get kids involved in counting to 100 and decorating your classroom by having them make classic paper chains. Cut construction paper strips ahead of time, and then have your students decorate them by writing something they learned on each one (if they get stuck, a math fact, a word they learned to spell, or a book they enjoyed reading this year in school are all good prompts). Festoon doors, windows and bookcases with the chains. For younger students, you can have each student contribute to a single 100-link chain instead.
100th Day T-Shirts
We love this cute 100th Day of School fashion show! If parents can supply a T-shirt, you can bring in a collection of adhesive googly eyes, foam letters and numbers, and an array of stickers. Let kids put 100 items on their shirts, then show them off during a classroom runway celebration. Project Runway has nothing on these guys!
100th Day Learning Centers
If you use learning centers in your classroom, make them special for the 100th Day of School. Some fun ideas include building a tower out of 100 blocks and having a counting station with jars of fun tactile items like pom poms, buttons, erasers, or pipe cleaners. You can also have kids decorate a grid of 100 blocks with stickers. Be sure to set up a literacy station with lots of great 100th Day of School-themed books!
