Flexible seating can encompass a variety of different furniture options. Mobile seating can be reconfigured into a variety of formations to support varied teaching methods, which is a key tenet of 21st Century Learning. Soft seating allows students to remain comfortable, enhancing their enjoyment while at school. Movement seating, which allows students to rock gently in their seats, has been demonstrated to improve attention spans and increase engagement.
School Specialty recently installed flexible seating solutions for Wichita Public Schools in Wichita, KS. We provided innovative classroom furniture solutions for two classrooms in L’Ouverture Elementary School, one for fifth grade students and one for second grade. These products were donated at no cost, highlighting our dedication to promoting modern learning and to those communities that it serves.
The donation came amid a district-wide push to offer students flexible seating. We assisted school officials with selecting those furniture options that would be most beneficial to their goals and met with teachers to determine what they hoped to accomplish. Chiefly, administrators sought mobile furniture so that they would have the ability to change their teaching methods on a day-to-day basis.
Soft seating, café units and rocker stools now populate the second and fifth grade classrooms. Additionally, NeoMove chairs and NeoRok stools from our Classroom Select furniture division were provided. NeoMove and NeoRok products allow users to move gently (forward, backward or side-to-side) in their seats, promoting a calming effect and encouraging them to concentrate. This is especially beneficial for students with special needs, for whom sitting still can be a challenge and distraction.
The flexible seating solutions have been a resounding success, so much so that Wichita Public Schools has ordered furniture for 16 additional K-5 classrooms at L’Ouverture Elementary, as well as for the library. We once again worked with teachers and other administers to identify their unique needs and provide for them through tailored flexible seating solutions, which will deliver and install in March 2017.
