Have your students draw a picture of where they do their homework and label the places where they store their homework supplies. Next have your students discuss their drawings and see if there are improvements that they can make. Where, when and how they study and do their homework are all important so whatever space your student uses, have them make sure it’s:
- Get away from distractions like music or the TV. If you can, make a deal with your family members about a quiet time or a quiet space that everyone will respect.
- Comfortable … but not too comfortable! Use a chair with good back support.
- Clean and tidy. Don’t let a paper clutter take over your work area!
- Don’t sit in a dark corner; it will hurt your eyes.
- Keep the supplies you need together.
Hint: A shoebox works great to store your supplies!
The bad part is, if you’re organized, you’ll run out of excuses for not doing your homework. The good part is, if you’re organized, doing your homework will be a lot easier … so you won’t need excuses!
- If possible, find a quiet place to do your homework and studying (at the same time every day). Keep it neat, and make sure you have a comfortable chair and enough light.
- Keep everything you’ll need to do your homework, including math tools and art supplies, together. Have a few extra pens and pencils handy, as well as some scrap paper.
- What do you need to take to school in the morning? Get it ready and together the night before. Check your planner for reminders at the same time.
Just as import as where you study is when and how you study
When:
- At the same time each day. Set a study time, and stick to it! Figure out when you’re most alert: right after school? At exactly 5:07 p.m.? After dinner?
- Before you play! Use fun activities as a reward for finishing your work.
- With a few breaks. Give yourself short breaks along the way, and come back to your work fresh!
How:
- Start with a plan. Check your planner and figure out what you need to work on. Don’t forget to look ahead for tests or projects coming up. Jot down a quick list of the things you need to do, in the order you plan to do them.
- For bigger tasks, remember, break them down into steps!
- Some students like to tackle the hardest work first, and then finish off with the easier work.
Other habits also help keep your brain healthy.
If you’re not doing all of the following things now, pick a few to work on this week!
- Eat breakfast every morning, and make sure it includes at least two food groups.
- Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
- Eat whole-grain foods every day: brain fuel!
- Go to sleep and get up at the same time every day.
- Get 10 to 11 hours of sleep every night.
- Relax before bed with a book (not TV).
- Spend some free time every day being active!
