This PE class activity requires students to practice underhand throwing, passing, receiving, and defending. These skills are important in many games and physical activities. Practicing them in Defenders of the Cone helps students to understand the concept of “skill transfer.” Check out the full instructions and the supplies list for the Defenders of the Cone PE class activity.
Defenders of the Cone SPARK PE Class Activity
In order to play Defenders of the Cone, students must be able to play as a cooperative team to dribble and pass the ball, then use an underhand throw to knock over the opposing team’s cone. Start a discussion with students about how practicing individual skills like underhand throwing can improve their performance when playing other games that require the use of that skill. Use examples from other areas of life such as: practicing flashcards to get better at solving math equations.
There are 3 people on a team and two groups per 20×10 paces grid. There is one ball per grid and the team with pinnies on starts on offense. The offense must pass the ball 3 times and then use an underhand throw to try and knock over the opposing team’s cone. If the ball is knocked down, thrown out of bounds, or the ball is intercepted, it changes possession. After a score, the groups switch roles and the new Offense passes the ball in starting from their endline.
In order to attempt knocking over the cone, the Offense team must:
- Make 3 passes between players
- Use only 3 seconds before passing/shooting
- Only take up to 3 steps/dribbles before passing/shooting
