Predictions for Education Trends in 2026 from an Expert

In 2026, I expect to see several important developments in early childhood education. One key shift will be an increased emphasis on outdoor learning, driven by growing awareness of the academic, social-emotional, and physical advantages it offers. Many schools will move beyond viewing outdoor time as simply recess and instead intentionally extend classroom learning into outdoor settings whenever possible, giving children opportunities to both learn within nature while developing an understanding of it.

At the same time, as early childhood programs continue to expand nationwide, play-based learning will remain a central priority. Research consistently shows that play is how young children learn best, and despite ongoing pressure to increase academic rigor, early childhood educators understand that play itself can deliver meaningful learning outcomes.

Finally, as educators recognize the critical role sensory experiences play in how young children make sense of the world, classrooms will become more purposeful in addressing the sensory needs of every learner. There will be an ongoing effort to design environments that offer true differentiation, allowing children to engage and learn in ways that best support their individual strengths and needs.
