Emily Beeman created this snowy piece using pieces of torn watercolor paper recovered from the art room recycling bin. The 10th grader began by sketching a penguin chick on an 11×14” piece of paper. Once completed, Emily then filled both the positive and negative spaces with torn pieces of the painted paper, finding just the right sizes and shades to convey the chick’s soft, downy under layer and reflective, icy surface of the penguin’s southern hemisphere habitat.
Laura Weber, Emily’s Intro to Art teacher at Ovid-Elsie High School in Elsie, MI, presented torn paper collage pieces by Ian Wright, Nancy Standlee, and Derek Gores as inspiration for this project. Laura couldn’t be prouder of Emily’s finished piece, particularly the attention her student paid to color and value.
