It’s hard to tell whether it’s life imitating art or art imitating life in this trompe l’oeil, created by 8th grader Tanner Higgins. Titled The Zebra, this black and white pencil drawing blurs the line between past and present, drawing the viewer into the partially completed scene with the expertise of a much older artist.
According to Jana Garrison, Tanner’s art teacher at Terra Vista Middle School in Lubbock, Texas, Tanner is not only a skilled artist, but also a straight-A student, the starting quarterback on his football team, and a participant in the school’s gifted and talented program. Ask Tanner about his accomplishments and he’ll humbly tell you that he’s blessed.
We’re thrilled to feature Tanner’s artwork on the cover of our Sax® sketch diary. We encourage you to submit your favorite art pieces for consideration on future Sax products or catalog covers. If selected, you and your student will both win a Sax merchandise certificate. Simply email an image of your selected artwork to artshare@schoolspecialty.com.
