Incorporating art education to transition from STEM to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) continues to gain momentum. That’s why we bring you the Cross Contour Geologic Tiles art lesson plan!
If adding one more activity into your jam-packed, STEM-based curriculum gives you instant anxiety, you can take a deep breath, because we’ve done the work for you! Several of our free teacher-created art lesson plans incorporate math and science as well, providing an instant, ready-to-use STEAM activity.
In this project, students bring geography and science to life. It’s a hands-on, creative activity designed to demonstrate the way tectonic plates, undersea volcanic activity, glaciers, and weather helped to form the current land masses we see today. Students can either use geometric forms to represent land masses, or create forms by pushing the tile up. Finish by adding a cross contour effect, similar to a hiking map that uses lines to trace similar elevations.
