10 Signs it’s May in School

Spring is in the air and if you are a teacher you can definitely start seeing the signs of the light at the end of the tunnel.

1. You notice a decline in you and your colleagues’ appearance

Let’s face it at the beginning of the year teachers are excited and full of hope at the thought of the new school year. Then somewhere around then end of winter teachers have been worn down by the ins and outs of the year and want nothing more than sleep. The alarm goes off in the morning and they start sacraficing their appearance just so stay in bed a little bit longer.

2. Your students stop paying attention because they are ready for summer

Students are also feeling the end of the school year getting near and it becomes harder and harder to keep their attention from drifting away.

3. You start becoming very creative to get their attention

Teachers will start doing everything possible to get their students to become interested in the assignment…even it means having to use analogies about celebrities you know nothing about.

4. You start to feel more like an entertainer than a teacher

At a certain point you realize that you are beginning to feel more like an entertainer than a teacher. You are doing anything you can think of to get and keep their attention even if it means acting like an clown.

5. Student group activities become more frequent

So, you start coming up with more group projects for the students to do so that you don’t have to teach as much. Even if your students hate it you rationalize that they are learning good skills for when they graduate and are in the workforce.

6. You are ~blessed~ with the opportunity to attend multiple spring concerts

It seems like every time you turn around there is another spring concert and you think about getting a cardboard cutout of yourself to send to the concerts instead of you having to actually attend.

7. Even the administration starts to slack a little

Staff meetings become more and more infrequent because even the administration is ready for summer vacation to begin. And let’s face it every teacher loves to hear the words “staff meeting cancelled.”

8. You start to the light at the end of the tunnel and look forward having more than ten minutes to eat lunch

Teachers have a rough go of it at school. They have to hold going to the bathroom until their prep periods, and they cringe if it is at the end of the day. And most of their lunch hour is spent trying to prep for the afternoon.

9. And to be able to sleep as late as you want

Teachers are excited that for at least a little bit of time during the summer (before workshops begin) that is magical because you don’t have to set your alarm clock.

10. Because let’s face it teachers are looking as forward to summer vacation just as much as students

On that last day of school, teachers hit the door running…even before the students sometimes.
