Creating a Learning Environment in Your Classroom

There are many different teaching styles and ways of learning, and regardless of whether one is superior to another, the learning environment has a big effect on students. Here are some fun and easy ways to create a classroom environment that fosters learning and creativity.

    A Reading Corner

A clean, quiet space that offers a variety of seating choices can encourage students to pick up a book and read. Offer books of varying reading levels to suit every student in the class. Be sure to provide plenty of light. Allow students time to read every day as part of a routine. For younger children, this is a great place for storytime.

    Student Work Display

Whether it’s artwork, a hard-earned grade, or a class project, providing a place to share accomplishments with others can foster self-esteem and promote hard work. Rotate the work throughout the year so that everyone has a chance in the spotlight.

    Start a Class Mural

What better way to promote working together than creating a class mural? This project can span over days, weeks, or even throughout the school year. If space allows, choose a blank slate for the mural on a classroom wall. Have students come up with ideas and vote on them together. Then, create a plan of action, give everyone a task, and get to work. It will be great to watch the mural grow over time, and at the end, the students will have something they all contributed to both individually and as a group.

    Allow for Movement

Organize the layout of the classroom to allow for ease of mobility. When the instructor can easily move about the room during class, it’s easier to control the classroom control and promote engagement. In addition, more open space allows students to rearrange their desks for group projects or individual work.

    Stay Organized

Students need to know where they can find supplies and tissues, or where to pick up work they missed while out sick. It’s also important for the teacher to never lose the place of important documents. Using filing cabinets, plastic storage bins, desktop storage, or individual cubbies can help keep classroom messes under control.

Most importantly, it’s crucial to keep your classroom clean and free of any objects that can cause harm or danger. Keeping the room at a comfortable temperature and free of distractions will also contribute to better learning. If you’re ready to work on building your classroom and creating a safe, fun, learning environment, visit the School Specialty online store for all your school product needs!
