How to Make Model Magic Frames and Ornaments

With a few basic shapes and Model Magic one can create long lasting frames that can be used as ornaments or table top frames. When Model Magic is applied to newsboard or mat board it can be stamped into creating interesting dimensional design that can be highlighted with metallic paints. In addition to the stamped designs students can create 3D applications out of Model Magic to attach and add interest to the frames.

    Product List:

    • Crayola Model Magic Deluxe Variety Pack, set of 14
    • Crayola Model Magic Shimmer, set of 5
    • Elmer’s Craft Bond Tacky Glue, 4 oz.
    • Newsboard, 9×12
    • Mini Pattern Imprinting Mats

    Instructions:

Have students draw a shape that they will use for their frame. It could be an ornament, bell, star or whatever they want to create. Students will need to allow for a 1 1/2 inch by 2 inch opening in the middle of their design.

Once a shape is created the student will need to cut two of the same shape out of the newsboard. Younger students will need help with this. Next find the center point of the shape and draw a 1 ½ x 2 inch rectangle out from the center. This rectangle will need to be cut out of the shape creating an opening for the photo. This will be the front board and will be decorated with Model Magic.

Now the Model Magic can be attached to the front board. Pinch off small amounts and press onto the board. Once the board is covered, students can take the Imprinting Mats and press images into the Model Magic creating an all over design. Any excess over the sides or middle can be easily cut away with a scissors. Let dry overnight.

To highlight the dry Model Magic take a small amount of metallic paint on your finger tip and rub lightly over the top. Allow this to dry.

The frame can now be assembled. Select a photo and center in the opening. Tape the edges down on the back side of the board. Now apply a light coat of tacky glue to both the front and back of the frame. Do not put glue on the photo. Press the front and back together. (If the students want to use as an ornament, a ribbon can be placed between the two pieces prior to gluing.)  A book can be set on top of the frame to help the two pieces adhere together.

Once dry, a triangle of newsboard can be taped to the back as an easel to display the frame on a flat surface. A ribbon can also be taped on the back as a hanger if used as an ornament.
