New Media Center Makeovers, Fresh Starts for NoCal Schools

To help fulfill its mission of “Transforming more than classrooms,” School Specialty proudly partners with the College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation each year to award fully-funded makeovers to deserving schools. These makeovers include the innovative supplies, furniture and equipment, technology, and security solutions needed to create safe spaces and engaging environments.

Schools submit essays about why a makeover would make a big difference to them, and the winning schools are announced as part of the January Extra Yard for Teacher’s Summit.

We find every school and every essay inspiring. This year was no exception, including two Northern California schools with particularly moving stories—San José High School and Manzanita Community School of Oakland.

San José High School is the second oldest high school in California and was in dire need of a transformation. For this underprivileged community, a new media center would be a welcome and much-needed addition the whole community could use.

Manzanita Community School is a fantastic elementary school located in the heart of Oakland, California that had been vandalized last April. An already outdated library and classrooms were severely damaged and desperate for repairs, making a full makeover even more necessary.

The experts at School Specialty developed designs that completely transformed the spaces. Learning zones, flexible/moveable tables and chairs, café tables, and soft seating options were used to create places that would motivate, engage, and inspire students and the community.

The grand unveilings took place in August and September of 2019. Educators, principals, and students who attended were thrilled with the incredible-looking outcome. We’re confident they will be equally thrilled with the student outcomes and successes these spaces will help ensure.
