Addressing the 21st Century’s Safety Concerns

Unfortunately, the news seems littered with stories of harm coming to gatherings of people. Perhaps no such gathering is more valuable than the one that happens every day in the nation’s schools.

But in the age of decrepit buildings and making due with less, safety is often an afterthought. Thankfully, through ingenuity, technology, and knowledge, those existing gaps can be filled and new ones can be addressed.

Any school or district’s safety plan should start with input from experts with experience in nationwide threat assessment and counter-strategies. For example, lockdown strategies in the face of an armed threat are still common, but current thinking by security professionals calls for a more fluid approach that requires intricate training.

Our subsidiary, SSI Guardian, facilitates these methods.

Not only do they employ nationally-recognized threat and safety experts that make any training richer and more timely, but they also provide tools that reflect this modern thinking in safety response.

    • Chief among these are quick-action locks that can be initiated with a push of a button by anyone who may find themselves and others in danger – teacher, student, or staff member.
    • Bleeding control stations and casualty response kits are designed with the idea that anyone should be able to use them, trained or not.
    • Intruder screens make it harder for an intruder to assess the situation.
    • Finally, fire protection equipment is available that reflects the latest science and safety strategies.

Perhaps one day, these measures won’t be necessary in American schools. Until then, we will find the most effective ways to keep our students and educators safe.
