Geometric Quilt Blocks: Art Lesson Plan

Colorful, geometric quilts have been around for what seems like forever. However, before the industrial revolution made it affordable to access a wide range of printed fabrics, quilts like we see today were not nearly as popular. This grades 5-12 lesson plan explores the unique precision and attention to detail that makes geometric quilt patterns so visually engaging.

    Geometric Quilt Block Art Project

Before beginning to create a geometric quilt pattern using colorful Tru-Ray construction paper, students will study the history of quilting and see the variety of traditional geometric quilt patterns. From there, the discussion includes a look at how the warm, cool, analogous, and complementary colors work together to create the pattern.

Students then get to choose between building a geometric quilt pattern block from the set of traditional examples or create their own unique pattern. Emphasize the importance of the color placement, noticing which color combinations draw the eye, and whether any color combinations create a mood or feeling. Using these observations, students will use historical knowledge, geometry skills and creativity to create a geometric quilt pattern block.

Tips for Creating a Unique Quilt Pattern Block

Geometric Quilt Blocks Art Lesson Plan In ProgressCreating a unique design can be a fun experience for students who want to branch out from the range of traditional patterns. Here are some tips to offer them as they brainstorm a unique way to lay out a pattern and the colors:

    • Consider using a simple design and bold colors. Every square in the block should have the same layout, but switching the colors or turning the design in a different direction can give the block more variety.
    • Check out decorative patterns and styles from cultures around the world for inspiration. Ex: Mayan & Aztec designs
    • Start with the image of a flower, tree, star, or other symbol and try to create a pattern that reminds you of the image by using associated colors or creating the image out of geometric shapes.
