Increase Math Proficiency in Your Students: STEAM-Based Art Integration Solution Yields Outstanding Results

According to studies, integrating the arts with math education equals long-term learning gains and retention — for students of all learning levels.

During the 2018/2019 school year, a pilot study in six Title 1 elementary schools in Los Angeles reported a significant 24 percentage point increase in the number of students who scored proficient after using  Learn It By Art® Art Integration Math Kits that target specific math skills. These gains occurred in the most challenging math domains and against the most difficult core standards for students in Grades K through 5.

Based on the positive results of the pilot, the Los Angeles district is now rolling out the Art Integration Math Kits to all 16 of their network elementary schools for the 2019-2020 school year.

Studies have proven that implementing Arts Integration into a math curriculum not only increases math proficiency but also enhances student participation and engagement while minimizing classroom disruption.

“The active engagement was off the charts!” said Cathye P., a first-grade teacher who implemented the Art Integration Math Kits into her curriculum. “I had no off-task behavior and the students were completely focused as I instructed the lesson. They were using math vocabulary and ideas during the discussions. The success they achieved made them so proud.”

Each Art Integration Math Kit contains three complete and distinct lesson Plans that are aligned to national standards. The kits align to the most difficult math domains for each grade and specific core standards within those domains. Each kit also includes online tutorials and support, along with a content-rich Teacher Guide with curriculum maps, instructional content, and pre- and post-assessments. All pre-prepped materials in each Lesson Plan serve a classroom size of up to 30 students.

“Everything was right there for me. The materials, the plans, the resources, and the ideas. The children enjoyed it and so did I,” said Teresa S., a second-grade teacher. “They were able to do art while being introduced to the [numerical concept of the] hundreds. The kids were motivated and engaged.”
