Tips for Teachers: Inspiration and Self-Care to Stay on Track While Working from Home

If you’re one of the many teachers who is now suddenly working from home, the stress and uncertainty of this new situation can be overwhelming. While you continue to provide your students with engaging lessons and activities, it’s also important to remember to take time to prioritize your needs as well. A few simple best practices and self-care must-do’s can go a long way to keep yourself mentally and physically fueled.

    • Utilize a planner to keep track of your tasks and to-dos.
    • Get ready for the day. Shower, get dressed, eat breakfast. Follow your usual morning routine.
    • Choose a dedicated workspace in your house to be your office that is comfortable and away from the noise.
    • Use video conferencing platforms like Skype, Zoom, Google Hangouts, Webex, etc. to help “see” students and colleagues.
    • Avoid the kitchen and laundry room, or anything that can distract you from your work.
    • If you are on a conference call or webinar, use headphones and always know where the mute button is.
    • Stay off social media! It can be a “rabbit hole” if you let it suck you in, and it is hard to get out!
    • Communicate work expectations with your family.
    • Take breaks throughout the day and leave your office space to do them.
    • Make sure to find some time to exercise daily as it is extremely important for your physical AND mental health.

Finding the balance between work and personal life isn’t always easy, and when you work from home the lines can blur even more. Taking time every day to focus on yourself, even for a short time, can go a long way in keeping you motivated and ready for any new challenges.
