    The Schoolyard Podcast

Building a Community of Support Through SEL and Reflective Practices

In this episode of The Schoolyard Podcast, Nancy Chung welcomes her former colleague and friend, Kim Gameroz. The founder of Teaching Inside Out, Kim has spent her career revolutionizing classrooms through the use of social and emotional learning (SEL) and behavior management strategies.

Nancy begins the conversation by discussing how reflective teaching practices can transform classrooms and significantly boost student engagement. Kim traces how she moved from successful classroom teacher to a change agent for educators nationwide. She also reflects on why setting clear teaching goals is important.

Kim introduces the concept of “Don’t get furious, get curious.” This saying is meant to encourage educators to look for the root causes behind student behaviors. It also helps to create a classroom atmosphere of empathy, understanding, and support. Kim shares how she encourages students to internalize expectations and visualize their goals.

Kim highlights how unrealistic it is to expect students to have social-emotional skills if they are never taught. The conversation moves on to the various “dials” of student behavior and how those can help educators better understand and support their students’ unique needs.

Kim shares a story about one particular student who benefited from the SEL strategies implemented by his teachers over the years. This story serves as an example of the positive effects of intentional teaching and support.

The conversation wraps up with Kim sharing about her upcoming book, “Becoming the Bison”. Kim highlights how bison are fearless and run toward scary and difficult situations. To fit with the theme, Kim shares that BISON is also an anacronym for Be Intentional So Others Notice. Her book focuses on how being intentional and working on lagging skills yields big results.

The episode is filled with unique insights and practical strategies for educators looking to build a classroom environment where their students can grow and flourish.
