    STEAM & STEM

    Why Early Childhood Needs STEAM

There are few who would argue the inherent creativity and curiosity that comes naturally to early childhood learners. Not only are they experiencing the world and everything in it for the first time, but they are building the foundation for their future via the patterns and behaviors that are encouraged during these crucial years. Because of this, science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics all belong in the early childhood education space.

What Does STEAM Look Like in Pre-K?

Young children might not be able to grasp overwhelming concepts like long division or how cars work, but their minds are ready to take on the building of foundational skills that may result in a better grasp of STEAM concepts later on. So, what do STEAM activities look like for Pre-K and toddlers?

    Science:

Small experiments and the thought processes of answering questions by trying something new are easy ways to incorporate aspects of the scientific process.

    Technology:

Using tools available like crayons, paper, and rulers to accomplish tasks is a great foundational piece for using complex tools like computers later in life.

    Engineering:

The thought processes of finding a problem and testing potential solutions is laying the groundwork for a mind that may be the answer to real-world issues someday.

    Arts:

Utilizing natural creativity, early childhood learners can illustrate and document concepts they learn. This crucial step in the STEAM process is how ideas and solutions are shared with the world.

    Mathematics:

Equations might be too much to handle, but organizing, playing with shapes, and recognizing patterns are foundational for solving tough equations later.

STEAM Activities for Pre-K and Early Childhood

STEAM activities don’t have to look like or cost as much as large-scale projects and experiments. Early childhood learners are capable of grasping and learning from simple activities that build processes in their minds, helping them to be thinkers and solution-finders.
